Beloved by the greatest engineers and producers in the industry, the Fairchild 670 has become the most sought after circuit for its unique low mid saturation, huge low end and smooth top end by just passing audio through it. While designing the Firechild [preamp we had two main objectives in mind: first and foremost, we want to give our customers the exact same coloration and frequency response achieved on the Stacmhild 670 and secondly, we wanted to make it as affordable as possible.

The Firechild preserves the same audio path as the Stamchild 670 with the same transformers, tubes and adds a tube preamp stage with 12AU7 which we also use on the compressor. With the aid of premium transformers reproductions made by AMI in the US and Brian Sowter in the UK and the use of two NOS 6BA6 and two 12AU7 tubes per channel we have managed to make this preamp’s tone and frequency response virtually identical to an original Fairchild.

THE IRON

The Firechild uses a total of four custom made transformers. The input transformers are designed and made by AMI in the US and are identical replicas of the UTC A-26 transformers which were used on the input on the Fairchild 670. These transformers have a beautiful low mid saturation which give each preamp a hefty low end and a gentle roll off on the top end making everything sound smoother while retaining clarity. The output transformers are designed and made by Sowter in the UK and are identical sounding replicas of the HS-52 which again play a crucial role on things sounding as big as possible.

THE TUBES

We have sourced a large stock of 6BA6 tubes which will allow us to service this unit for a lifetime. Each Firechild comes with 4 tubes per channel, 2 NOS 6BA6’s on the output section and two 12AU7 tubes on the preamp section.

Functionality

Line input to run your mixes through it,  48V phantom power, reverse polarization, a pad switch (-20dB) and an output fader to saturate the circuit an obtain a ray of colors are all included. There is also an automated DI which automatically switches on when detected.
