The 1073MP is the most authentic and accurate sounding replica of a vintage 1073 preamplifier on the market today. Tis original British circuit designed by Rupert Neve has been for almost 5 decades the most sought after preamp in the world. With it’s stunning Marinair transformers, simple yet beautiful circuit and unique capacitors this unit has an extremely thick and tight low end but a soft and smooth top end.
At Stam Audio we have been building 1073’s replicas for almost a decade and decided to do our final revision with a custom Sowter output transformer, Carnhill input and line input transformer, tantalum, polystyrene and Vishay capacitors and BC550C and 2n3055 transistors which are all measured one by one before being soldered into each preamp. While time consuming this is the only way to achieve the same frequency response, Thd and timbre of vintage unit.

The Transformers
Transformers are the single most important part of this circuit and the heart of any 1073 preamp. They provide the clarity and larger than life sound with unique low-mids and low end. The 1073mp uses a Carnhill input and a Carnhill line input transformer on each channel which are direct descendants of the the original Marinairs and a custom UK made Sowter 1777 output transformer which perfectly recreates the original Marinair LO1166 output transformer like we never heard before. All transformers are tested and shipped from the UK to our lab were we tested them one by one to ensure each 1073mp is in spec and sounds the same
Capacitors and Transistors
After the Iron the one thing that makes this circuit stand out and gives it it’s original character are the polystyrene, tantalum and Vishay capacitors as well as the BC550 and 2n3055 transistors. Every single part is auditioned, measured and carefully hand soldered into each 1073MP. Precision metal film resistor are used through out the circuit with a 21 position gain switch providing up to 70dB of gain

The 1073 MPA is a gorgeous sounding unit. It has a very smooth sound with the smiley face tone that we have all come to know and love. Comparing to UAD 1073 plugins and some other cloned preamps I own, the 1073MPA has a more rich and beautiful 3d image, and sounded like a record from the start. The plugins fell short and sounded dull, 2d, and flat. Depending on the mic choice and how you mic your source, you probably won’t even need EQ if you go through one of these units. I love this pre-amp. I use it on just about everything. I noticed that if I turned it up to very high gain and don’t trim it down, it began to oscillate and make wild sounds. Although these came into use once, I reached out to the Stam team. They sent replacement parts, gave instructions for my tech, and covered my repair costs. That’s the only reason I put 4 stars. But honestly, 5 star pre-amp especially for the price.

They are raw and a great addition to the studio sounds great on drums, guitar and vocals and really bring out the texture of the parts through the mics. I went from vintage V76’s to Vintech 1272’s, to Aurora Audio GTQ2, to UAD unisons. I will never use a software mic preamp emulator again.I don’t do this for a hobby, So-I went to test out the 1073 mpa with a Shure 57-I didn’t feel like rigging up my KILLER STAM SA-47 mk2 for a preamp test. I sang a little (I have a kind of gravelly Greg Allman voice) I was like “Are you f#%*ing kidding me?!? This sounds like a high end tube mic!” It’s Josh with his sonic wizardry. A 57! I won’t even use a 57 on my guitar cab…(Ribbons) For me, this is THE 1073 to have.

Well I finally got one, I bought it slightly used on reverb. Let me say this, I’ve had the real thing as well as the BAE 1073. This sounds the best to me.
