Stam Audio SA-202C VCA — Vintage DBX 202C “Gold Can” Replica

The Stam Audio SA-202C VCA is a meticulously reverse-engineered replica of the legendary DBX 202C “Gold Can” VCA, one of the most sought-after VCAs from the golden era of analog recording.

The original 202C VCAs were used in the SSL 4000 E and G Series consoles, as well as various DBX, MCI, and other professional analog equipment. Their distinctive discrete circuitry contributed to the harmonic character, coloration, and nonlinear behavior that became an integral part of the classic SSL sound.

Unlike later VCA designs based around integrated THAT Corporation chips, the vintage 202C design used a discrete circuit architecture with considerably higher harmonic distortion. This additional THD is a major part of what many engineers describe as the “mojo” of the vintage SSL sound.

Each SA-202C is individually built, tested, and calibrated at the Stam Audio laboratory in Chile using the same fundamental discrete architecture as the original design.

Upgrade Your Compressor

The SA-202C can be installed as a replacement or upgrade in many SSL-style bus compressors and other compatible VCA-based equipment, allowing you to retrofit your unit with the character of the vintage discrete VCA design.
