Classic American sound taken to the next level.
The Red Devil is a dual stage tube preamplifier designed with coloration and low end in mind. Essentially a tube A312 preamplifier, it retains the aggressive character of the original while adding further harmonic distortion, low end and coloration with the addition of a second output stage based on a ECC83 tube and a US-made 5:1 steel output transformer.
A 312-INSPIRED PREAMP, PUSHED FURTHER
The Red Devil was designed for engineers who love the unmistakable character of classic American transformer-coupled microphone preamps—but want more attitude, more low-end authority, more harmonic coloration, and greater flexibility than a strict vintage recreation can provide.
At its heart, the Red Devil combines a carefully engineered recreation of the classic 312-style signal path with a custom tube gain stage and carefully selected modern components. The result is a preamp with the fast transient response, punch, midrange presence, and unmistakable forward character associated with the legendary 312 family, while adding a larger low end, increased harmonic density, and a more aggressive overall character.
This is not simply a vintage circuit placed in a new chassis. The Red Devil is our interpretation of what happens when you take the fundamental characteristics that made the original design so desirable and deliberately push them further.
Big. Fast. Aggressive. Musical.
The original 312 architecture became famous for a reason. Its combination of a high-quality input transformer, discrete op-amp gain stage, and output transformer produces a sound that is extremely difficult to replicate with modern integrated-circuit microphone preamps.
The Red Devil starts from that philosophy.
Our US-made 1:8 input transformer has been engineered to recreate the response and behavior associated with the input transformer found in classic 1970s 312 microphone preamp cards. Rather than simply choosing a transformer based on specifications, we carefully evaluated the transformer in the complete circuit, because the interaction between the transformer, discrete amplifier, gain structure, and loading is a major part of what creates the character of the original design.
The result is an input stage capable of delivering the combination of fast transients, controlled saturation, punch, and harmonic complexity that engineers associate with the classic 312 sound.
It is particularly effective when a source needs to come forward in a mix without requiring excessive EQ.
OUR SA-25 DISCRETE OP-AMP
At the center of the Red Devil is our own SA-25 discrete operational amplifier, reverse engineered around the topology and sonic behavior of the discrete amplifier used in vintage 312-era designs.
The discrete op-amp is a crucial part of the character of these preamps. It is responsible for much more than simply providing clean voltage gain. Its behavior under different signal levels contributes significantly to the way the preamp responds to transients, harmonics, and increasingly driven signals.
We spent considerable time developing and auditioning the SA-25 to achieve the combination of:
- Fast transient response
- High headroom
- Strong current drive
- Aggressive midrange presence
- Controlled harmonic generation
- Dynamic response when driven
- The unmistakable punch associated with classic 312-style preamps
Rather than using a generic modern op-amp and attempting to recreate the sound elsewhere in the circuit, the Red Devil uses the discrete amplifier as a fundamental part of its sonic architecture.
THEN WE ADD A TUBE
This is where the Red Devil begins to depart from a conventional 312 recreation.
Following the discrete op-amp stage, the signal passes through an ECC83/12AX7 tube stage, introducing another layer of harmonic coloration and nonlinear behavior.
The tube stage adds complexity to the harmonic structure of the signal, particularly as the preamp is driven harder. Depending on the source and gain setting, this can range from subtle thickening and increased dimensionality to a noticeably more aggressive and saturated character.
The result is not simply “a tube sound.”
The transformer and discrete amplifier provide the speed, punch, attack, and authority of the classic architecture, while the ECC83 contributes additional harmonic density, warmth, texture, and coloration.
This combination gives the Red Devil a much broader tonal palette than a conventional clean preamp.
Back the gain down and it can provide a powerful, authoritative recording signal.
Push it harder and the circuit begins to reveal its personality.
TWO CUSTOM US-MADE OUTPUT TRANSFORMER
After the tube stage, the signal reaches our custom-made US output transformer, utilizing steel laminations selected to reproduce the behavior and tonal characteristics associated with the classic AP2503-style output transformer.
The output transformer is not simply an isolation device. It is an integral part of the Red Devil’s sound.
Transformer construction, core material, winding configuration, impedance, and the way the transformer is driven all influence the resulting frequency response, transient behavior, saturation characteristics, and harmonic content.
In the Red Devil, the output transformer has been selected to complement the preceding discrete and tube stages, producing a signal that feels larger, thicker, and more harmonically complex as the circuit is driven. Having two output transformres is a major part of why the Red Devil can deliver a particularly substantial low end while retaining the aggressive midrange presence and fast attack expected from a 312-inspired design.
MORE THAN A CLONE
There is a difference between reproducing a vintage circuit and designing a preamp inspired by one. Sometimes absolute historical accuracy is exactly what you want and sometimes you set out to exceed the original tone.
That is the philosophy behind the Red Devil. We retained the fundamental characteristics that made the original 312 architecture famous, but deliberately developed the circuit to provide:
More harmonic coloration
The additional ECC83 tube stage introduces another layer of nonlinear behavior and harmonic complexity.
A bigger low end
The Red Devil has been voiced for a substantial bottom end being a dual-stage preamp with two large Iron output transformers.
Higher THD
Rather than treating distortion as something that must always be eliminated, the Red Devil uses controlled harmonic coloration as part of the instrument.
More attitude
The combination of transformer coloration, discrete amplification, and tube saturation gives the Red Devil a more aggressive personality than a strictly clean preamp.
Greater versatility
With phantom power, impedance switching, polarity reversal, and an integrated DI, the Red Devil is designed for modern recording environments rather than simply reproducing a historical piece of equipment.
THE SOUND
The Red Devil is designed to sound fast, punchy, thick, forward, and harmonically alive.
It excels when you want the preamp itself to become part of the sound rather than simply providing transparent gain.
The low frequencies have weight and authority without feeling disconnected from the rest of the spectrum. The midrange carries the characteristic forward quality associated with classic 312-style preamps, while the tube stage contributes additional harmonic texture as the circuit is driven.
Transient information remains immediate and energetic, making the Red Devil particularly effective on sources where attack and impact are important.
Drive the input harder and the character becomes progressively more apparent. Instead of simply becoming louder, the signal begins to acquire additional harmonics, density, and saturation.
This makes the Red Devil an excellent choice when you want to record a source with a strong sonic identity before it ever reaches the DAW.
BUILT FOR ELECTRIC GUITARS, DRUMS & HARD VOCALS
The Red Devil was specifically developed with sources that benefit from harmonic density, punch, and attitude in mind.
ELECTRIC GUITARS
The combination of transformer saturation, discrete gain, and tube coloration can give electric guitars considerably more size and authority.
It works particularly well when you want the guitar to have a strong midrange presence and enough harmonic information to remain aggressive in a dense arrangement.
For close-miked cabinets, the Red Devil can provide the type of immediate, physical attack that helps guitars sit in a mix without relying entirely on EQ or compression.
DRUMS
Drums are one of the natural applications for the Red Devil.
The fast response of the discrete gain stage preserves the initial transient while the transformer and tube stages can add additional density and harmonic coloration.
On kick, snare, toms, room microphones, and drum overheads, the Red Devil can be used either for substantial clean gain or deliberately driven for a more aggressive sound.
For engineers who like to capture some of the finished character during tracking rather than attempting to create it later with plugins, this is where the Red Devil becomes particularly powerful.
HARD VOCALS
The Red Devil was also designed with aggressive vocals in mind.
Its combination of midrange presence, harmonic saturation, and increased low-end authority can give a vocal more size, density, and forward energy.
When pushed, the tube and transformer stages can introduce additional harmonic information that helps an aggressive vocal maintain its presence in a dense production.
The result can be a vocal that feels more finished and dimensional before compression or EQ.
EVERY TUBE IS AUDITIONED
Tubes are inherently variable components. Two tubes carrying the same part number can exhibit meaningful differences in electrical characteristics, noise, microphonics, gain, and tonal behavior. For this reason, we do not simply install a tube and ship the unit.
Every tube used in the Red Devil is auditioned and selected based on its measured characteristics and performance.
This additional step helps us maintain consistency from unit to unit while ensuring that the tube stage performs as intended within the complete Red Devil circuit.
BUILT IN DI — READY FOR MORE THAN MICROPHONES
The Red Devil is not limited to microphone sources.
An integrated DI input allows you to connect instruments directly to the preamp, making it particularly useful for electric guitar, bass, keyboards, and other line/instrument-level sources that benefit from the coloration of the Red Devil’s gain stages.
This also makes the Red Devil an extremely useful front-end tool for reamping and hybrid recording workflows.
Instead of requiring a separate DI box, you can plug directly into the Red Devil and use the preamp itself as part of the instrument’s recorded sound.
MODERN CONTROL WITHOUT LOSING THE CLASSIC CHARACTER
The Red Devil includes the features expected from a modern professional microphone preamp:
- 48V Phantom Power
- Input Impedance Selection
- Polarity Reverse
- Built-in DI
- High-quality transformer-balanced signal path
The impedance switch allows the engineer to interact with the microphone and input transformer in different ways, providing an additional tonal control that can be particularly useful with dynamic and ribbon microphones.
Polarity reversal makes the Red Devil equally practical for multi-microphone recording, where phase relationships between microphones are critical.
HANDMADE IN CHILE
Every Red Devil is hand-built in our laboratory in Chile.
Keeping production in-house allows us to maintain a level of control that is difficult to achieve with large-scale outsourced manufacturing.
Each unit is assembled individually, allowing us to:
- Inspect components before assembly
- Measure critical parts
- Audition tubes
- Verify circuit performance
- Check the completed unit
- Ensure consistency between units
We build, measure, listen, and verify.
This approach allows us to maintain the same philosophy behind our entire product line: the circuit matters, the components matter, but the final sound matters most.
